Ecodesign and Energy Labelling for Energy-related Products (ErP)

European Union

Whether you require a product now or for a project completed in some years’ time. We take compliance seriously, guaranteeing that our solutions always meet current and upcoming European Union environmental and energy efficiency regulations, such as Ecodesign. Our global team of regulatory experts is always by your side.

Ecodesign and Energy Labelling drive the market towards the most efficient HVAC solutions

Ecodesign and Energy Labelling, in combination, have been considered one of the world's most effective policy tools in achieving energy efficiency. The key objective of the EU’s Ecodesign measures is to improve the sustainability of products by setting minimum energy efficiency and environmental performance requirements. Its related Energy Labelling schemes applies mostly to consumer products and provides a simple way to compare their energy efficiency. Both frameworks guide customers towards the most sustainable and efficient solutions available on today's market.

A critical project requirement

The framework rules for Ecodesign are laid out in the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which impacts all ErP sold within the European Union. Its application is mandatory throughout the EU and even adopted in several non-EU countries (e.g., Turkey).

Based on the ESPR, product-specific regulations are adopted that create conditions within which ErP manufacturers (e.g., ventilation, fans, air conditioners) are obligated to reduce their energy consumption and environmental impact.

The ESPR and its implementing ErP regulations are regularly reviewed, which means that minimum requirements tighten over time. Complying with these laws is mandatory for projects in every segment.

Why Ecodesign is pivotal to achieving sustainability

The EU aims to be the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. One of the key objectives to achieve this overarching goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels). This has resulted in revised climate and energy-related legislation to align current legislation with 2030 and 2050 targets.

Ecodesign and Energy Labelling together display a 'Push/Pull' dynamic. Whereas Ecodesign pushes ErP towards higher efficiencies above minimum energy performance requirements, Energy Labelling pulls the market to go beyond these minimum requirements.

The next phase of the legislation

Ecodesign and Energy Labelling are key components of a complex framework of EU legislation aimed at reducing energy consumption, promoting sustainability, and lowering carbon emissions. Since the adoption of the ESPR in 2024, this legislative landscape is evolving. We are witnessing an increasing emphasis on sustainability-related criteria in product-specific legislation to promote a circular economy, such as material and resource efficiency, recyclability, durability, reparability, and reusability.

Until recently, Ecodesign primarily and successfully focussed on energy efficiency of ErP. Since the adoption of the ESPR in 2024, the main focus shifted to sustainability in general. For the time being, most implementing, HVAC-specific regulations have been adopted under the previous Ecodesign Directive and just do that, focussing on energy efficiency with minimal sustainability requirements.

However, in the coming years, these regulations will be revised as well with the purpose to include wider sustainability requirements. As such, we can expect sustainability-related calculations, declarations, and lifecycle assessments to demonstrate performance from both the energy and sustainability aspects of ErP.

If you order with Systemair today, you can rest assured that all our products already consider upcoming legal revisions and corresponding requirements.

Systemair commits to future-proof compliance

The trend towards ever stricter energy requirements and cutting greenhouse gas emissions to limit climate change favours Systemair, which invests heavily in developing high-quality, long-lasting and, above all, low-energy usage products.

Through our extensive engagement with trade associations, standardisation bodies, and policymakers across Europe, our experts shape the development of these laws, which translates back into our forward-thinking product development processes.
